What are we? docomomo australia inc, the Australian working party (or branch) of DOCOMOMO, was established at the end of 1999 following a public meeting held in Sydney in conjunction with a landmark conference organised by the NSW Historic Houses Trust called Opera House: Fibro House. The conference canvassed some of the issues facing the buildings of the early modern era and docomomo australia continues to pursue the issues raised at that conference as well as the aims and objectives of the parent organisation, DOCOMOMO International, as set out in the Eindhoven Statement.
DOCOMOMO International was initially established in the Netherlands in 1990 to draw attention to the plight of some of the pioneering early modern buildings which were decaying for lack of a current use. After being headquartered in the Netherlands since its establishment, DOCOMOMO International now operates from Paris.
DOCOMOMO International publishes a biannual journal and holds a biennial conference (on each even year), both of which promote the issues of concern to docomomo to a wider world community.
Our website contains a calendar of docomomo events, a register of significant modern movement buildings, along with other information (including an e-newsletter) for members of docomomo australia.
For information about membership of docomomo see our membership page.
Where are we? docomomo australia is a national organisation run by volunteers. It is our aim to have active groups of docomomo australia members wherever they are needed in Australia. Currently there are active groups in Sydney and Melbourne, and members in Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Contact our Chair for details of members outside Sydney.
