building register
The Australian Working Party of DOCOMOMO has begun to compile a register of Modern Movement buildings, sites and landscapes in Australia. Information on each building in the register is recorded in a standard format, or fiche, so as to facilitate integration of this information into the DOCOMOMO International Register.
The first twenty buildings of the DOCOMOMO Australia Register are the buildings included in the 2000 publication by DOCOMOMO entitled The Modern Movement in Architecture: Selections from the DOCOMOMO Register. These buildings are listed below.
buildings in Victoria
The Victorian members of DOCOMOMO Australia have compiled a searchable database of important 20th Century buildings in Victoria. This will be available online early in 2009. In the meantime, if you wish to access the database, please contact Hannah Lewi at the University of Melbourne.
future registrations
Progessively entries for other important Modern Movement buildings will be prepared and forwarded to DOCOMOMO International, for inclusion on the International Register. This information regarding entries on the Australian Register will also be available from the Working Party here in Australia.
To avoid duplicating research work already undertaken on a voluntary basis the Australian Working Party is currently collating information from organisations such as the Royal Australian Institute of Architects who maintain a register of Twentieth Century buildings.
Members are encouraged to prepare entries for buildings they consider worthy of inclusion on the DOCOMOMO Register. The standard form (fiche) and guidelines for preparation of the fiche can be obtained from the DOCOMOMO International Register website. The determination of criteria is left to the individual working parties. The Australian Working Party has started to debate the development of Modernism in Australia and hopes to transfer this debate into a public forum in the near future.
If you are interested in assisting with the preparation of entries please contact DOCOMOMO Australia. A version of the form in Microsoft Word format is available for use.
